What is the best cat breed to buy?

I want to get a cat for me and my husband, this is gonna be our first pet. I use to have a dog when I was little but never had a cat and I have no idea which breed to choose. I want a friendy cat that likes to be caressed and is not a loner. Also, should I get a pair of cats, so it's not lonley when we are at work, or is cat fine being alone most of the day? Originally I wanted to take one from the shelter but apparently if I am not the owner of the house I can't adopt a cat unless I have a landlor's written permission.....so I am gonna just buy it from the breeder.
