Are American Staffordshire Terriers good companions?

I went to the local animal shelter and fell in love with a male staffordshire terrier. I want a companion dog who is good with children, other dogs, and is affectionate. I know qualities very between each individual dog. I was just wondering if staffordshire terriers are normally like that.
